Back to overview

As outlined in its first biennial report on the implementation of the global approach to research and innovation, the European Commission is establishing working groups comprising members from the science and the diplomacy fields.

The aim for these groups is to elaborate a forthcoming European science diplomacy framework.

The European Commission is launching five groups:

  • Working Group 1: Using science diplomacy strategically to tackle geopolitical challenges in a fragmented, multipolar world
  • Working Group 2: Making European diplomacy more strategic, effective and resilient through scientific evidence and foresight
  • Working Group 3: Strengthening science diplomacy in Delegations and Embassies and fostering the EU’s global science diplomacy outreach
  • Working Group 4: Building capacity for European science diplomacy
  • Working Group 5: Cross-cutting group on definition, principles and EU added value of European science diplomacy

We are delighted to announce that CESAER has been invited by the European Commission to contribute to the third working group, and will be represented by our Secretary General Mattias Björnmalm and our Director Karine Samuel (Vice President for International Affairs of Université Grenoble Alpes).

Each working group will be co-chaired by a high-level diplomat and scientist, and is composed of around 20 invited members.

We look forward to contributing to shaping developments in this important area, including also in relation to ongoing and upcoming efforts on research security which are of particular importance to universities working at the forefront of science & technology.
