Bucharest, 18th October 2018

The leaders from fifty universities of science and technology from 25 countries united within CESAER discuss the future of science and technology at the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest (UPB).

CESAER - the strong and united voice of universities of S&T in Europe- gathers for its annual meetings to celebrate the bicentennial year of UPB, celebrating 200 years of its mission to impact society for the better. Moreover, 2018 is a milestone year in the Romanian history, as it marks a century since the formation of the modern Romanian state. Finally, the gathering is timely with a view on the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2019.

The event thus emphasises the value of European collaboration in research, education and innovation for the benefit of society. Key topics discussed include the role of universities of science and technology in research and innovation infrastructures and the ongoing interinstitutional negotiations on the next generation of EU funding instruments. Our Members will meet with the European Commissioner for Regional Development, Corina Crețu.

CESAER underlines the need to safeguard the common (European) values such as research integrity, academic freedom and institutional autonomy. Sustainable peace and prosperity incorporating respect for the rule of law and human rights, democratic citizenship, evidence-based policy making and the free circulation of knowledge are paramount for the functioning of universities.
