Task Force Sustainable Funding

Back to overview

Mission, scope and objectives

The Task Force Sustainable Funding 2022-2023 addresses the following three main themes:

  1. Advocate for sustainable funding and its vital importance for delivering long-term impact and to safeguard balance between (top-down) challenge-driven research and (bottom-up) investigator-driven frontier research;

  2. Advocate to shape European research, education and innovation policies and strategies (especially towards the EU institutions), and contribute to implementing the ERA and the EEA.

  3. Help shape EU funding programmes in research, education and innovation such as Horizon Europe, Erasmus, European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF).

As part of these themes, a range of objectives are foreseen which will be further developed with task force members:

  1. Contribute to the debate on sustainable funding and its vital importance for delivering long-term impact and to safeguard balance between (top-down) challenge-driven research and (bottom-up) investigator-driven frontier research;

  2. Translate the insights from our work linking the Social Science and Humanities (SSH) with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) into concrete recommendations for competitive funding policies and instruments at any level;

  3. Address and advocate on European research, education and innovation funding policies and programmes and constructively engage with policy makers such as the European Commission, Council and Parliament on these topics;

  4. Contribute to shaping the ERA and the EEA;

  5. Collaborate closely and forge strategic partnerships - where appropriate - with other stakeholder organisations such as the European University Association (EUA), the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the Universities Informal Liaison Offices Network (UnILiON), Science Europe, the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations (EARTO), BusinessEurope and the broader research community;

  6. On the request of task force members, promote participation in EU funding programmes and consortia-forming amongst the Members through informal networking.
